Manchester has just been named the city with most serviced apartments in the UK, after London. But what else do we know about Manchester

There have arguably been 2 Manchesters. The first, the Roman fort at Castlefield and the second, around the Cathedral and Chethams Music School, which formed the medieval town of Manchester. By the time of the Norman conquest in 1066, the region was clearly Anglo-Saxon and their name for the town was "Mameceaster". In early times Manchester was a little known hamlet adjacent to and belonging to the then noble town of Salford.

 

Over the centuries the town developed with a flourishing textile industry and in the 17th Century the name Manchester became popular.

Nowadays, Manchester is a bustling city, home of Coronation Street, United and a host of restaurants and bars to entertain the visitors.

May sees a number of exciting things happening in Manchester: The Wheel of Manchester is back, so you can take to the skies and see the town in a completely different light from a completely different angle. (Exchange Square)

And then there is the BUPA Great Manchester Run, one of the most prestigious 10k running events in the world. (Sunday 18th May)

* Fraser Hospitality has opened its first Gold Standard apartments in Tokyo, Fraser Place Howff Shinjuku. It is located in the new "Hundred Circus" development. There are a total of 375 apartments divided over 2 towers. The East Tower has 175 units and opened on March 1 2008 and the West Tower has 200 units and will open this summer. 

 

* Marriott Executive Apartments has opened their 143 unit serviced apartments Atyrau in Kazakhstan. It is Marriott´s first location in the country.

The Apartment Service Team was among other leading players in the UK serviced apartment industry, BridgeStreet, Saco and Go Native, in participating in a fascinating Conference of the Institute of Travel Managers.   This leading industry association brought together key UK buyers of corporate travel from major blue chips and leading SMEs with the main suppliers of travel (air, rail and ground transportation), accommodation, travel management companies and support services for a two day conference in Dublin addressing the main issues confronting our industry today.  This ranged from supplier/buyer relationships, sourcing of travel and accommodation product, pricing and distribution models and the ramifications of the Corporate Manslaughter Bill on travel, among other hot topics.  With insights into the future from leading speakers and a keynote speech from Alistair Campbell the conference was hailed as ‘a fantastic forum to work and discuss issues in an open environment with all parts of the corporate travel industry, a buyer group becoming more and more aware of the benefits of serviced apartments and the role they can play in the traditional hotel based accommodation programme for all sizes and types of industries’ said Charlie McCrow, MD of The Apartment Service.
