There is no "FOCUS ON....." in the August
edition of the news letter. Instead a request from the editor to all
readers for suggestions for future topics and regular inclusions to be
considered. The coming months will see the start of a very exciting
period for The Apartment Service with the launch of our new web service
with XML connectivity and online booking facility and also the
launch of the first
global report into the serviced apartment industry,
which is sponsored by us. We want you to be part of these exciting
developments. The newsletter, which is being read by an increasing
audience is a good platform for properties listed on our
site to promote their services. For more information, and to
send your suggestions, please send an email to

News in August:
Hotels in Budapest saw the
strongest year-on-year growth in profitability of ten European cities
surveyed by TRI Hospitality Consulting in May 2008.
Income before fixed charges (IBFC) also known as gross
operating profit per available room jumped by 34.5% to 62.54 in the
Hungarian capitals hotels. TRI attributed the profit growth to a 3.7
percentage point decline in payroll costs as a percentage of total
revenue to 25.1%. It said some hotels had cut staff levels over the
past year, with one general manager of a four-star property employing
60 fewer now than three years ago.
Wage costs have undoubtedly risen since Hungary joined the EU in 2004
and in reaction some streamlining of resources has occurred, said
Jonathan Langston, TRI managing director. Despite the rise Budapest s
hotels were still only the seventh most profitable of the ten cities.
Those in London topped the list with IBFC per available room of
103.28, although this was 1.35 lower than in May 2007.
Second most profitable were Amsterdam hotels, where IBFC rose by 9.5%
to 102.18. The Dutch capital hosted four major events in May 2008,
including the biennial cleaning industry trade fair, ISSA Interclean,
which attracted 24,000 visitors.
Paris hotels were third with IBFC per available room of 98.70, 11.6%
higher than in May 2007, ahead of those in Berlin with 91.25 (+24.4%)
and Prague with 79.69 (-29.6%).
In sixth came Vienna with IBFC of 70.38 (-13.8%), followed by Budapest
, Warsaw with 56.79 (-11.4%), Hamburg with 56.48 (+7.9%) and Munich
with 43.87 (-5%).
In terms of absolute revenue per available room (revPAR), hotels in
Paris were the best performers in May with 181.20 (+7.1%), ahead of
Amsterdam with 158.97 (+4.7%) and London with 148.87 (+3%).
Vienna came fourth with 134.57 (-6.9%), followed by Berlin with
126.61 (+10.8%), Prague with 111.35 (-17.3%), Budapest with 94.23
(+6.3%), Hamburg with 92.26 (+3.6%), Munich with 89.01 (+4.6%) and
Warsaw with 81.45 (-3.7%).
