The French President Nicholas Sarkozy and his new first lady, Carla have just left the UK after a 36 hour state visit. They stayed in arguably the nicest serviced apartment in London, at Buckingham Palace. EUROPE

* The Apartment Service has commenced grading their Roomspace Serviced Apartments, following the directive of VisitBritain. Eleven properties have received four star grading and two properties the three star accolade.

* Saco Apartments has opened their 2nd location in Reading, Clipper House.

* Manchester has the largest supply of serviced apartments in the UK outside London, according to a new report by agents Savills. The capital leads the way by some distance with 5200 units. Manchester now has 338 units, followed by Birmingham (258), Leeds (143), Bristol (125), Edinburgh (107) and Cardiff (42)

MIDDLE/FAR EAST

* Bangkok´s serviced apartment sector is expected to face a chronic oversupply in 2011, when 38 new projects with 6580 units come on stream. Twelve of the 38 projects are being jointly developed between local and foreign groups. Global partners are mainly from Middle East, Singapore and the USA. The remaining 26 are by local developers, but most of them will be signing contracts with global chains to run the apartments.

* Newly opened: Fraser Place Langsuan in Bangkok. 129 apartments, ranging from studios to four bedroom apartments.

It sometimes feels like there’s nothing new under the sun when it comes to the hotel industry. I get daily press releases in my inbox: “We’ve gone green!” “You can buy our bedding online!” “We won an award!” Blah, blah, blah.

Frankly, hotels are a little boring these days. But I recently heard about a unique property in Cambodia, and it really piqued my interest. It’s a cool concept that I hope spreads.
